Agriculture plays a very vital role in the Indian economy. The sector contributes around 16 percent to GDP. Over 58 percent of the rural households are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. However, a severe drought in the last two fiscal has reduced agriculture productivity. In fiscal 2016-17 with a positive forecast for monsoon, the agriculture sector is expected to perform better.
