Nanodiamonds have dimensions from 2 nm to 50 nm depending on the specific application. They are synthesized most commonly by detonation methods or impact events such as an explosion or meteoritic impact. The hardness and high fracture toughness of nanodiamonds enable their application across several industries including composites, polymers, and lubricants. Recently, initiatives focusing on altering the surface chemistry of nanodiamonds to explore their supeior mechanical and optical properties, high surface areas, and tunable surface structures are gaining prominence.
