This research service examines consumer perceptions of car sharing based on a survey conducted in 2012 in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Only one out of four city residents in Europe is familiar with the car sharing concept. Once familiar, the interest rate in car sharing reaches 38%. Consumers are most attracted by the all-inclusive and convenient nature of the concept and value its high transparency and accessibility. The key driver of car sharing is cost efficiency, while the key barriers include attitudinal hurdles and operational issues. Overall, the market for car sharing is still in its nascent stage and it will most likely coexist with other modes of transportation.
