Description
Central and Eastern European countries are still dependent on conventional energy sources to meet their power demands. The EU Commission's targets drive these countries to promote renewable energy power generation. Renewable energy generation systems are unreliable; and hence require an energy storage system when installed in large capacities. Currently, pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) serves the purpose of both renewable energy generation and energy storage; hence, most the CEE countries with hydro power plants, have a PHES system too. PHES is the first energy storage technology to be implemented in CEE countries. Other technologies are expected to be adopted on a large scale after 2020.
