Healthcare interoperability is a global challenge for industry stakeholders. While a number of organizations are working towards developing and implementing industry standards, challenges emerge every day as technologies and their uses evolve. Advances in Big Data, genomics, and pharmacy information technology (IT) are helping to identify new applications and markets for healthcare IT, which will require a fresh approach towards standardization. This research, conducted in collaboration with the International Health Terminology Standards Organization (IHTSDO), explores opportunities for SNOMED CT expansion in emerging healthcare IT markets.
