Description

Motion sensors detect linear or angular motion. Accelerometers are linear devices, yaw rate sensors are angular devices. High-G accelerometers are used as crash sensors to pretension seat belts and to trigger airbags. Low-G accelerometers are used for body control functions such as electronically controlled suspension systems. They are also used with some anti-lock brake systems. Yaw rate sensors are used with electronic stability control systems, which help drivers avoid oversteer and understeer. If inexpensive silicon micromachined yaw rate sensors become available, they may also be used in rollover detection. Yaw rate sensors measure speed of rotation rather than tilt.
