Turkey’s Ministry of Energy has slated a new ‘Coal Law’ to be introduced in the next one year. In tandem with the government's coal expansion agenda, the law will help ascertain the sector's growth, marking a sustainable economic growth path. While it is difficult for Turkey to completely fore go energy import, the country’s prime goal is to minimize the volume. The government is promoting an ambitious goal of increased coal exploration activities, when other countries are taking steps to curb the harmful environmental impact that coal has. While the environmental aspects are being addressed under the government’s prescriptive approach umbrella, an impending law dedicated to the coal sector—to ascertain coal mining safely and seamless functioning—seems to be extremely timely. However, there could be multiple scenarios as to how the energy sector and energy players are expected to react to the coal law initiative since the energy sector is likely to avail certain benefits as well as face challenges.
