In this report, we discuss Open Source software: what the term means, and the opportunities and obligations for companies that utilize Open Source software. We consider various ways in which profit-making companies can profit from Open Source software. Finally, we look at Red Hat’s unique strategy, portfolio, and culture in an effort to determine how the company can make money while giving away much of its intellectual property.
