Mobile data traffic continues to grow exponentially, with several countries - including the United States - reporting extremely high growth rates for mobile data in the past two years. Some drivers of mobile data traffic growth include availability of high-speed networks, increased penetration of next-generation mobile phones (especially the smartphones) as well as connected devices such as laptops, netbooks, notebooks and tablets; and higher bandwidth consuming applications and services. Mobile operators, on their part, have to intelligently manage the shared wireless spectrum and maximize the data capabilities of their networks within the allowable boundaries of physics.
