The global growth in smart grid markets is accompanied by convergence of technology and subsequently convergence of competition. While this market is attracting a huge range of players from a diverse range of backgrounds, there is a clear top tier of competition comprising the international organisations who are pushing the smart grid agenda through the development of integrated offerings. This study examines the competitive structure, geographical differences and variations in the strategic positioning of the top players. The growth strategies of these tier 1 players (ABB, Cisco, IBM, Schneider Electric, GE and Siemens) are examined in detail and presented as profiles.
