Description

This research service report presents an analysis of the current capability and expected future trends for produced water treatment technologies. Presently produced water is treated mainly to meet disposal standards. Current practices also include reinjection into deep wells. Conventional treatment methods such as distillation, membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, hydrofloatation are used to a larger extent compared to other technologies to address the two major pollutants – hydrocarbons and salinity or total dissolved solids. These technologies have drawbacks such as high energy intensity, extensive chemicals usage or requirement for integration with multiple technologies. An analysis of upcoming trends in produced water treatment and their expected adoption in the future have been mapped.
