Rapid population growth leads to an exponentially increase in electricity demand. There is an increasing need to improve power transmission efficiency, and enabling renewables and diversified energy mix. High-voltage transmission systems, including HVDC and FACTS, are being actively adopted to minimize the power transmission losses and to ensure connectivity. This research is an attempt to identify, review and analyze the main power system components, as well as efficient and cost-effective methods for transmitting electric power from one location to another. The study covers innovations and technology advancements in high-voltage transmission systems, as well as technologies performance analysis and comparison.

Power transmission and distribution is one of the important infrastructure around the world providing an electrical energy for people and business across various industries. Growing urbanization and industrialization leads to an exponential increase in electricity consumption demand. Underdeveloped power infrastructure causes power losses and transmission lines overloads. The constantly growing number of renewable energy sources requires alternative methods of transporting energy from remote regions to developing city centers. Establishment of electric vehicle infrastructure, renewables integration and long distance transmission push the need for advanced power transmission and distribution technologies. High-voltage transmission systems, including high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) and flexible altering current transmission system (FACTS), are being actively adopted to minimize the power transmission losses and to ensure grid stability and reliability. The combination of AC and highly controllable DC systems has been mainly used to withstand intermittent additional load on the grid and enable operation at high stability. Advanced grid infrastructure solves various power system control problems and accommodates the rise of renewables in the energy mix. This research service titled, “Technologies in Power Transmission and Distribution,” provides an overview of efficient and cost-effective methods for transmitting electric power from one location to another. This research study focuses on the latest achievements in the development of high-voltage transmission systems, including HVDC and FACTS.
