Description

Platform-based production has gained importance among truck manufacturers in recent years. It offers improved margins due to increased scalability, as well as multi-regional presence. Nearly half of the total number of heavy trucks produced globally will be platform-based by 2025. OEMs are expected to start focussing on global platforms, shifting from regional platforms, with manufacturers such as Daimler and Volvo spearheading this trend both in terms of volume and global presence. With rising demand in emerging markets such as China and India, value platform will gain importance among global OEMs. Trucks based on value platform will come to the fore, offering increased flexibility in terms of features, as well as price range. Platforms will evolve from purely product based to one based on trucking services and solutions. Services such as telematics and advanced solutions such as mobile-based freight aggregation, autonomous trucks, and truck platooning will facilitate global truck platform development. These technologies will become as important as product-based platforms in the next 10–15 years.
