Description

Automotive electrical systems are about to transition from a 12/14-volt standard to a 36/42-volt standard because demands on electrical systems are increasing as more electrical components are added, and higher-voltage systems will be better able to meet these demands. 36/42-volt systems will be an enabling technology for changes throughout the vehicle that will result in more comfort and convenience features, greater fuel economy, and lower exhaust emissions. However, several hurdles must be overcome. Some of these are cost issues, some are technology issues. This study examines the implications, costs and benefits, likely timetable of the transition, and what various companies are doing in anticipation of the transition.
