Description
LPWAN stands for low power wide area network. The technology was started in about 2011 and remains an emerging radio technology for wireless networking solution. Unlike cellular networks, LPWAN uses unlicensed spectrum in the sub-1GHz frequency range such as 868MHz and 915MHz. Hence, the absence of spectrum fees allows LPWAN to be substantially lower in cost than cellular M2M. Moreover, LPWAN solution consumes less power than cellular technology, resulting in longer battery life of approximately 10 years, making it a compelling option for industrial users and agencies involved in deploying smart city applications. The study examines whether LPWAN providers can be a threat to telecom operators.
