Market Overview
Stringent emission norms and focus on sustainable mobility drive luxury EV sales
As governments across the world tighten emission norms, EVs are expected to be part of their sustainable mobility strategy, with higher incentives and subsidies being offered to vehicle owners. China and Japan will have the highest number of new EV registrations by 2017-2018 owing to strong government support and increasing foreign investments. The uptake of high-priced luxury EVs will, however, be low in these countries. Europe and North America, on the other hand, will lead the global luxury EV market in sales until 2020 due to higher disposable income and the availability of EV infrastructure in these regions. The growing importance given to style, power and advanced telematics will continue to fuel the demand for luxury EVs. Luxury original equipment manufacturers' (OEMs') focus on next-generation smart mobility technology such as autonomous driving, air gesture recognition, personal voice assistance and retina recognition will also boost sales.
On the flip side, the number of electric cars is multiplying much faster than the number of charging stations, compelling OEMs to look for viable alternatives to solve this problem. Daimler and the BMW Group, for instance, have signed an agreement on the joint development and implementation of a standardised technology for inductive charging of electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles. OEMs are also working together on R&D to develop better battery technologies for luxury EVs.
