Efforts to increase both security and efficiency at airports due to heavily growing passenger traffic at airports have given rise to the need for more sophisticated screening technologies and mechanisms such as radioactive screening systems, nuclear radiation scattering, innovation lanes, 3-D scanning, self-service checkpoints using mobile applications on smartphones, risk-based screening using biometrics with centralized image processing, machine learning with big data analytics, remote screening using artificial intelligence-based body scanning, smart tunnels with integration of the mentioned technologies, automated passport control (APC) kiosks, automated border control (ABC) (also known as eGates), and a mobile passport app developed through the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency.
