Electricity pricing is one of the key drivers of development within Sub-Saharan Africa. This report documents the various electricity tariffs currently in operation throughout major countries within the region. Economic and social development across the continent is both driven and restrained by the fluctuation of electricity prices - currently the trend is to increase previously artificially lowered prices, towards a point where they are cost reflective. Many countries have maintained these rates in order to subsidies use of electricity by the poor, however the impact of this has been that the majority of the generation, transmission and distribution systems have not been properly maintained.
