Power storage through the use of battery energy storage systems is critical to countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. While the foremost application of battery storage would be in renewable energy-based off-grid power systems for rural electrification and all-round electricity access, batteries are set to play a major role across commercial and industrial segments, especially in powering telecommunication towers and providing a clean and sustainable source of power to off-grid lodges and luxury resorts.

With the growing operational expenditure and the reducing cost of renewable energy technologies such as solar PV and wind, industries and mining processes are aggressively pursuing renewable generation to meet power requirements. A continuous supply of quality power through renewables can only be ensured through the incorporation of battery storage systems in the setup. This research service provides an overview of the various battery chemistries currently employed in Sub-Saharan Africa and also enlists the selection criteria as prescribed by consumers from different categories. In addition to covering the various aspects of battery storage across consumer categories, it also highlights the future of battery storage systems across residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

Renewable energy has been witnessing rapid expansion across certain geographies in Sub-Saharan Africa. With growing global competitiveness and rising input costs, commercial and industrial systems have been aggressively pursuing renewable energy as a means to achieve business sustainability and improved profit margins. The study looks into the various geographic hotspots that are creating demand for battery storage systems and are likely to be in focus for such systems in the future as well. In addition, the study highlights case studies of battery storage applications that have been successfully implemented in the region. These case studies provide an overview of the choice of system, associated configuration, and application sought after by consumers.

The adoption of battery storage systems is not without its own challenges. This study discusses the various factors that will contribute to the uptake of battery storage systems as well as the challenges that must be addressed for the successful adoption of these systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.
