Microgrid can be represented as a smaller version of an utility grid, which can operate by itself as a stand-alone grid as well as a part of the main power grid. Microgrids are usually driven by distributed generation systems, which involve a combination of renewables-based and fossil fuel-based generators. Presently, microgrids are being directed toward energizing remote islands and other remote facilities such as research institutions and army bases. The microgrids are gradually evolving toward a 100% renewable model, but are still maintaining a hybrid generation strategy.
