AMR has been embraced by utilities for large end-use customers and hard-to-read accounts, and has made inroads into the prize market of small end-use customers. Following an intense period of growth in 2000 due to numerous large projects, growth slowed in 2001-2002. The turmoil in the electric market and the slowdown of the U.S. economy has weakened the short-term prospects of the gas and electric markets but strengthened the water market. Long-term prospects will be improved if tax incentives for Advanced Metering AMR are approved or if wholesale energy prices become volatile. Without these stimuli, the market is still expected to grow to provide increased efficiencies and cost savings to utilities.
