The Nucleic Acid Testing has wide applications in Hong Kong. It was first adopted officially for crime scene investigation in 1990s. Following that, a DNA database was set up by government for tracking of criminals. Similarly, parentage testing using NAT technology was also set up for the verification of parent/child relationship in connection with immigration-related cases. The outbreak of SARS in 2003 has further emphasized the importance of NAT, which became the main tool in detecting SARS. Since then, both research and healthcare sectors have been pouring in large amount of funding to further expand NAT testing menu, particularly in infectious disease.
