Sensors undertake multiple tasks in the power industry. They maintain equipment efficiency in power generation and speed up power flow in the transmission lines. Sensors ensure safety and generate alerts in case of any impending mishaps. Sensors play a vital role in monitoring the health of both the generating machinery and smart grid infrastructure. Sensors enable intelligence of control systems. Power companies’ future focus is to ensure two-way power flow and efficient line ratings and achieve power balance in the grid. Radiation detection sensors have been effective in ensuring safety by monitoring radiation around nuclear power plants and perpetuating corrective measures. Sensors help monitor effluents such as carbon and sulfur in coal- and oil-based power generation plants. The implementation of regulations indirectly determines sensor deployments. Continuous research is leading to the development of new and combined sensors for different applications. Sensors are gradually becoming predictive in nature, ensuring accident-free, pollution-free, and highly efficient and clean power generation.
