Expansion in the mining sector and rural electrification programme are the main drivers behind the demand for power in Botswana. In response, the government has embarked on an energy recovery program, which has translated into the expansion of the country's sole power station. In addition, the introduction of potential independent power producers could help Botswana become not only energy-independent but also a major participant in the Southern African electricity market.
