What is required is a way for enterprises to manage their infrastructure in the new distributed environment. This is where infrastructure management comes in. In some cases, evolved from the older network management applications, but increasingly delivered by a new breed of solutions, infrastructure management extends management end to end to manage from the user to the application, encompassing all networking, computing, and application resources. Armed with a pervasive management capability, enterprises can now begin to approach the reliability that is required in the hyper competitive markets that are beginning to characterize the 21stcentury. At the very least, such management capabilities are essential to controlling a rapidly expanding collection of service providers now collectively representing the once homogenous computing environments of the 20th century.
