2001 has been in many ways a pivotal year for the cable modem industry and worldwide, the industry is in a high growth virtuous circle. The major market, North America shows a healthy growth of the subscribers’ intake and the Asian, Latin American and European markets are also gearing-up. The rapid changes at play include an ongoing wave of consolidations in the headend equipment market and a strong trend toward commoditization in the cable modem market. Yet, the competitive landscape is marked by the coexistence of companies with very different approaches to the market, with different competitive advantages and by the corresponding set of strategies. Most of all, the DOCSIS standard is now clearly defining the market worldwide.
