The European smart meters market is very much in the growth stage of its life cycle, with massive investment and acceleration anticipated within the current decade. Currently Sweden and Italy are the only mature markets in Europe. Smart meter developments are taking place in countries like Denmark, Finland and Norway, while large scale rollouts have been planned in countries such as UK, France, Spain and Portugal. The smart meter installed base in Europe is expected to grow from 43 million in 2010 to 200 million in 2017. The market foresees its strongest growth post 2012 with the publishing of the standardisation mandate.
