Most parts of Europe face recurring droughts as below-average rainfall combined with heatwaves exacerbate water stress. The latest revision of European Union wastewater directives has driven nations to invest in tertiary treatment of wastewater and proactively encouraged water reuse to meet agricultural and industrial water demand. This includes membrane-based reuse and sea water or brackish water desalination. Disruptive technologies can reduce fouling, improve flux, enable high selectivity, and reduce energy consumption. These include membranes with innovative surface coatings, precision engineered spacers, or inserts, as well as innovative system designs (mostly in membrane bioreactor systems). Proven reductions in total cost of ownership and improved operational performance has, to an extent, restrained price sensitivity and accelerated adoption. Competitive intensity is high: global brands have a well-established regional presence and a large installed base. Product commoditization results in tight margins for polymeric membrane solution providers. A growing number of membrane start-ups are gaining market share through disruptive innovation that primarily targets complex or high-strength industrial effluent treatment and membrane replacement.

Frost & Sullivan analyzes numerous companies in an industry. Those selected for further analysis based on their leadership or other distinctions are benchmarked across 10 Growth and Innovation criteria to reveal their position on the Frost Radar™. The publication presents competitive profiles of each company on the Frost Radar™ considering their strengths and the opportunities that best fit those strengths.
