Europe’s public-transit fare systems are moving away from cash, paper tickets, and closed-loop cards. Riders now hold an account, and the system works out the best fare after the journey, whether they pay with a bank card, a phone, or an app. Three forces drive demand: aging equipment that needs replacing, national and regional schemes that bring many operators under one fare system, and riders who expect to simply tap and go. Suppliers now earn their place by running platforms, not by selling machines. Buyers look for cloud back offices, bank card acceptance, fare capping, passenger counting, and managed services. Programs are larger and more collaborative, and in national deployments several equipment makers can share one back office. Progress is held back by long public tenders, which are sometimes challenged in court; the work of connecting new platforms to older systems; and the need to coordinate many small authorities. Three themes shape the outlook: systems that work across operators and borders, ticketing that merges with payments and journey planning, and recurring revenue contracts. Gaps remain in automatic check-in/check-out travel, cybersecurity, mobility-as-a-service, and revenue protection analytics.
