Flexible packaging is a simple and well accepted type of packaging which provides a wide range of possibilities in customization and design flexibility according to the needs of the product being packaged. While conventional coatings applied to package substrates act as a protective layer with aesthetic appeal, recent developments in functional coatings have achieved the ability to incorporate changes in the surface and bulk properties of the coating, thereby enabling functionalities, such as scratch resistance, hydrophobicity, antimicrobial protection, gas and moisture permeation resistance and cohesive strength. These coatings are defined as functional coatings for flexible packaging. Considering the importance given to extending the shelf-life of products and improving the reusability of packaging material, there is significant interest in developing new coating materials that could enhance the functional capabilities of flexible packaging and offer quality retention and protection in different environment.This research service titled “Functional Coatings for Flexible Packaging – Technology Impact Assessment” discusses the types of flexible packaging and the importance of barrier coatings in different application sectors. An overview of the different types of barrier coatings is provided along with an overall application landscape has been discussed.In specific, the need for barrier coatings in flexible packaging is discussed to give an understanding of the benefits in different use cases.
