All these are matured markets. To achieve growth most competitors try to differentiate their products. In spite of these strategies, most of these sensor types have to perform the same basic function - parameter monitoring and measurement. As the process plants are undergoing higher-level automation installation to maintain process integrity to maximize resource input utilization. With the adoption of IoT platform enabling remote monitoring the demand for intelligent sensors is on the increase. Manufacturers of flow, pressure, and temperature are installing varying levels of intelligence and smartness in their sensors in order to enable them to generate actionable data. However, this trend is less visible in level sensors. IoT has enabled the proliferation of wireless networks in large manufacturing plants (both process and discrete). The installed base for connected field sensors is exhibiting higher growth in most vertical markets. Discrete applications like infrastructure monitoring, smart agriculture, preventive health, automotive, and smart electronics are experiencing the installation of more sensors than ever before. There is an increasing demand for open protocols and unlicensed bandwidths to maintain uninterrupted transmission of field data generated by field sensors.
Contact technologies continue to remain unchanged while as non-contact technologies are penetrating strongly in the field sensor paradigm. However, developers of non-contact technologies have to work harder on the higher accuracy levels expected of these technology-based sensors. Among the common technology platforms, MEMS has the highest adoption compared to all others. Miniaturization of MEMS sensors has accelerated this pace.
End-users of filed sensors like pressure, flow, temperature, and level increasingly prefer intelligent and connected sensors option especially for control applications. Another visible trend is the increasing demand for combined sensors. Currently, two parameters sensing combined single sensor (like flow and pressure) is in use. Sensor researchers are working on developing a sensor that can sense three or more parameters at a time. It is expected the market maturity will continue but both new businesses and replacement markets will exhibit high growth.
