The consumer eSIM market in Western Europe is growing steadily, supported by the rising availability of eSIM-capable devices, particularly smartphones, and expanding travel-related use cases. However, commercialization has yet to translate into mass adoption. Despite Apple’s global launch of an eSIM-only smartphone in September 2025, which prompted mobile operators to expand eSIM data plans and strengthen digital support channels, the market still shows a significant gap between eSIM-ready devices and active eSIM subscriptions. The prevalence of multi-SIM support across major smartphone brands in Europe, including Google, Samsung, and Xiaomi, is a key restraint reducing the urgency for consumers to migrate from physical SIM cards to eSIM. From 2027, the annual growth rate is forecast to accelerate to 22.2% from 19.4% in 2026. Growing consumer familiarity with eSIM technology, broader OEM support for eSIM-only smartphones, and reduced friction in digital activation are factors poised to drive growth. Robust demand for cross-border travel will further support adoption. This study analyzes the size of the consumer eSIM market in Western Europe and provides a market forecast for cumulative human mobile subscriptions, measured as active connections, from 2025 to 2029, with 2025 as the base year. The forecast is segmented by technology type, including eSIM and traditional SIM cards. The research examines strategic imperatives shaping Western Europe’s ecosystem landscape and provides a comparative analysis of the US and Chinese markets. It also identifies key eSIM technology trends, outlines priority use cases, and highlights emerging growth opportunities.
