This growth insight report presents an analysis of the technological and clinical disruptions that are set to impact the global medical imaging industry. The healthcare industry is undergoing rapid changes catalyzed by innovative technologies, and the impact on the imaging industry is likely to be quite significant. Though emerging technologies such as AI and Precision Imaging reinforce the strength of imaging in the care pathway, other competing technologies such as microwave imaging and magnetoencephalography are set to pose a challenge in the long run. Imaging as an integral part of the care continuum is exposed to the vagaries of other factors in the ecosystem. A new surgical technique which demonstrates clinical evidence of superior outcome can increase the demand for interventional imaging procedures (e.g., TAVR, TMVR/r). Though technologies such as Coronary Computed Tomography Angiogrpahy (CCTA) have been available for a long time, the recent, mounting evidence of its clinical effectiveness is triggering higher adoption rates in clinical practice. On the other hand, innovation in non-imaging segments (e.g., liquid biopsy, blood-based biomarkers) is threatening the invincible status of imaging in oncology, neurology, and cardiology.

This report analyzes each modality and quantifies the number of procedures by application (by specialty). It further delves into the impact of each disruption on each modality by year and in terms of number of procedures. Incumbent imaging leaders have to strategize for the future with these disruptions in consideration which can in turn impact their product development, engineering, production, and marketing aspects of the business.
