For most businesses, the on-premises data center remains a critical component of their IT environment. However, those same businesses desire the efficiency and flexibility of the cloud model within their private environments. They therefore need to optimize infrastructure to enable the business to launch new applications and services, quickly, securely, and cost-effectively.

While there are many ways to modernize the company data center, three approaches stand out:
--provisioning hyperconverged infrastructure
--implementing a software-defined data center (SDDC)
--deploying private cloud technology in the on-premises data center

Used individually or collectively, such approaches can provide many of the benefits of cloud in a premises-based facility.     

In this report, we will look at three infrastructure options—private cloud, software-defined data center, and hyperconverged infrastructure—and the role of each in the modernization of the on-premises data center.
