As the industry continues to innovate across novel small- and large-molecule therapies, including RNA-targeted small molecules, cell and gene therapies, and mRNA therapies, pharma sponsors increasingly rely on partners for technology access, database generation and analysis, and preclinical and clinical research.

These disruptions continue to drive industry transformation through a convergence model in which multiple vendors support different stages of drug discovery and development. The ecosystem is expanding through simultaneous reliance on pure-play technology vendors, AI platform providers, academia, universities, research centers, and outsourcing vendors such as CROs that integrate AI algorithms into preclinical and clinical research portfolios.

AI companies have also evolved beyond pure-play platform-as-a-service models into AI-powered therapeutics providers. Many now build proprietary asset pipelines that directly compete with global biopharma companies while continuing to partner with biopharma sponsors to develop novel therapies. At the same time, growing interest in precision medicine is driving partnerships with organ-on-chip technology providers and synthetic biology companies, further expanding the ecosystem.

The industry continues to rely on multiple funding sources, including VC funding, IPOs, corporate partnerships, angel investors, and government grants, all of which recovered steadily in 2024–2025 following a slowdown in 2023. Alongside established players such as Recursion, Insilico Medicine, AbCellera, and Schrödinger, the industry is witnessing the rise of emerging AI vendors such as Xaira Therapeutics, Chai Discovery, Isomorphic Labs, and Iambic Therapeutics, which are raising between $300 million and $1 billion to support in-house R&D initiatives.
