This study assesses the automotive market in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and focuses on the 5 main markets: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The analysis covers passenger vehicles (PVs) and pickups. In the ASEAN automotive market, pickups are the most used and popular commercial vehicles (CVs) in various geographies and industries, including agriculture. The segment has a larger market share than PVs.

ASEAN developed automotive production bases, and active production countries are Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The region houses assembly plants of foreign and domestic OEMs, such as Perodua and Proton from Malaysia and VinFast from Vietnam. As an emerging region, ASEAN’s GDP, urbanization, road infrastructure, and living standards continue to rapidly grow and will accelerate private vehicle sales and ownership. However, the automotive market faces challenges owing to geopolitical conflicts and supply chain disruptions, which are causing chip shortages and delivery delays. In 2022, the ASEAN automotive market continued to grow at a positive rate because of pent-up demand during the pandemic and economic growth recovery.

The study outlines the total size of respective automotive markets, provides historical and forecast data from 2021 to 2023, defines the main highlights of the ASEAN automotive industry in 2022, and describes market trends in 2023.
