A new generation of private 5G networks is emerging to address critical wireless communication requirements. A private 5G network can be defined as a cordless and seamless local area network that makes use of 5G technologies to build a network with dedicated bandwidth and infrastructure. This will help support enterprise connectivity needs.

New digital use cases, such as robotics, automated guided vehicles, and augmented and virtual reality are increasingly being used in day-to-day operations. These use cases will require networking, computing, and storage capacity to work. Private 5G networks will be able to provide such capabilities and enable new use cases.

Private 5G network will open the opportunity to a host of previously infeasible applications, enabling industrial-scale Internet of Things (IoT) networks in factories, warehouses, ports and more. Unlike a public network, a private 5G network can be configured to an enterprise’s specific needs.

There are multiple approaches to deploying a private 5G network. Large companies are likely to install private 5G networks using fully owned infrastructure and dedicated spectrum, managing these network in-house or through an outsourced mobile operator. Medium-sized and small-sized companies are more likely to lease network equipment, outsource network management, and sublease spectrum from a public mobile operator. In order to enable widespread adoption of private 5G networks, collaboration will be crucial for in-depth knowledge and expertise across industry segments.

The concept is not new. 5G technologies will serve as an enhancement and will accommodate the skyrocketing data that will be present across networks which has been difficult with existing technologies.

For example, the manufacturing industry is highly interested in private networks for its factories. In fact, several automakers in APAC, such as BMW Brilliance Automotive and First Automobile Works (FWA), both from China, have expressed interest to operate and maintain private 5G networks.

The manufacturing, logistics and transportation, and healthcare sectors will present the biggest opportunities for private 5G networks in Asia-Pacific. Out of all the potential deployments, manufacturing, logistics and transportation, and healthcare sectors are expected to account for 28.7%, 15.4%, and 15.9%, respectively, in 2025. As the number of connected devices in the industrial environment increases, it will become a requirement to deploy private 5G networks to handle the vast amount of data.
