Market Overview
Trunked Radio Systems to Improve Efficiency of Airport Operations
Terrestrial trunked radio (TETRA), the most prevalent radio communications standard for airport operations in Europe, has been slowly finding acceptance in other regions. For instance, in North America where the predominant standard is the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International Project 25 (APCO P25), TETRA-based networks have been implemented in some parts recently.
Significantly, many airports continue to use analog systems for operations, since the transition to digital systems is cost prohibitive and time consuming. However, opting for dual capable systems that operate on analog and digital modes will help in reducing the shortage in communications systems as well as enhance the current systems. However, the transition will require meticulous planning and implementation.
The market participants will be looking to tap the demand from verticals such as gate actions for departure and arrival, baggage handling, security, facilities management, emergency response, airport law enforcement, ground transportation and passenger assistance, by developing devices and processes based on digital radio communications. Additionally, owing to the growth in tourism in Asia-Pacific, many new airports are being commissioned and old airports are being renovated. In North America, numerous cities are seeking to modernize their airports to attract more businesses to their states. This, in turn, has increased the demand for radio communication systems to facilitate effective airport operations. The best opportunities would be at CAT-3, 4 and 5 airports where passenger traffic is not as high as the top category 1 and 2 airports.
