Though the global uninterruptible power supply (UPS) industry is mature, it continues to offer considerable growth opportunities in different market segments, such as technology, end-user vertical, power range, and geography. This Frost & Sullivan study provides in-depth insight into the total UPS market and various high-growth segments. The industry is intensely competitive, and one of the key challenges for a UPS manufacturer is to differentiate itself from its competitors. Manufacturers must keep up with new technologies and industry trends and introduce UPS solutions that cater to businesses' growing needs.

Power demand has been rising and become a major area of concern for all end-user applications, especially those that have critical loads, such as data centers. Energy savings is a major challenge for UPS system end users. In the data center segment, the focus is on improving power usage effectiveness (PUE) while being flexible to meet constantly evolving needs. PUE optimization is mainly driven by rising energy bills, environmental constraints, and the increasing power density. The other challenge is the need to address end-users’ scalability and flexibility issues. Manufacturers must introduce UPS products that will allow end users to scale as their businesses grow. Given the high demand for modular UPS systems and the intense competition, UPS manufacturers must innovate and come up with advanced modular concepts that allow enhanced flexibility and modularity.

Data centers account for the largest share of global UPS revenues, and this segment is also expected to register the fastest growth during the forecast period. Key factors that will drive the market during this period are the increasing demand from hyper-scale data centers; high levels of investment; significant increases in data creation and consumption; high volumes of data traffic, fueled by emerging technologies, such as 5G, edge, and IoT, along with AI/ML developments; the ever-increasing enterprise outsourcing; the growing adoption of hybrid-cloud; and the high degree of data center activity in emerging economies.

From a technology standpoint, modular UPS is expected to grow at a significantly faster rate than monolithic UPS. The global market for modular UPS is still in the growth stage, with significant potential for penetration in future. Awareness levels have been rising steadily over the past 5 years. At present, modular UPS accounts for about 13% of the total UPS market.

From a regional perspective, Asia-Pacific is the largest market for modular UPS systems, followed by North America and Europe. China generates the highest modular UPS revenue in the world; it is also expected to be the fastest-growing market in terms of overall revenue during the forecast period.
