Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) is a security solution that acts as a policy enforcement point between cloud service users and cloud services. The term CASB was coined over a decade ago, but today it is an essential component in any security architecture. CASB inspects the cloud application layer, so it comes as no surprise that the market has witnessed strong and rapid growth since its emergence.

CASB was originally created to address the challenge of shadow IT use. In other words, companies adopted it to gain visibility into the cloud applications and services used in the organization without explicit approval. However, CASB has evolved over the years and vendors have added many different features to their products. Besides the frequently offered functions such as Single Sign-On (SSO), credential mapping, device profiling, encryption, and tokenization, some vendors may also include next-generation Data Loss Prevention (DLP), Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM), User Behavior Analytics (UBA), and adaptive access control, among other features. Today CASB is getting incorporated into SASE and SSE offerings.

Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) is a security solution that acts as a policy enforcement point between cloud service users and cloud services. The term CASB was coined over a decade ago, but today it is an essential component in any security architecture. However, CASB was designed at a time when perimeter-based security was still relevant; therefore traditional CASBs are not well-suited for the modern security environment. Fortunately, vendors have adjusted their CASB offerings; in this study, Frost & Sullivan discusses CASB's evolution and its role in this new cloud-centric security landscape. As part of the research for this insight, Frost & Sullivan spoke with leading cybersecurity experts including Cloudflare, Forcepoint, Grip Security, Proofpoint, and Versa Networks to examine different views about the CASB market. What is clear is that CASB functionalities are still very significant. CISOs need to protect data and ensure security so their companies can enjoy the benefits of the cloud – and CASB remains a necessary tool for this task. The aim of this study is that CISOs understand how CASB can help their companies grow by providing visibility into the cloud, ensuring data security and threat protection, and helping them meet compliance requirements. Furthermore, CASB is one of the cornerstone features of the fast-growing SSE and SASE architectures, so CISOs should definitely have a clear understanding of this solution.
