Europe has been faced with unprecedented heatwaves and droughts triggered by climate change. This has affected surface and groundwater availability across regions, leading to water use restrictions and investment in water reuse infrastructure.
Southern European countries such as Spain, Cyprus, Malta, and Greece have invested in desalination as an alternative source of freshwater. Over the last 5 years, Europe, mostly the European Union (EU) member states, has seen a significant policy shift towards treated water reuse to build resilience to droughts. The revised EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD), implemented in January 2025, mandated nutrient and micropollutant removal to make treatment plants energy-neutral, incentivize investment in water circularity, and ensure safe and sustainable discharge or reuse of the treated wastewater.
This revised directive has increased attention on the removal of micropollutants, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in drinking water. Membrane-based water and wastewater treatment systems are set to play a key role as a preferred and economically viable technology for micropollutant removal. Innovations have focused on the development of customized spacer & separator technologies, ceramic membranes with performance comparable or superior to standard polymeric membranes, and innovative coated membrane solutions that can significantly improve flux and selectivity and reduce energy consumption.
To help leadership teams navigate these pressures, this deliverable identifies the Top 8 strategic imperatives for 2026, mapped against Frost & Sullivan’s proprietary Strategic Imperative 8™ framework, which analyzes the factors creating pressure on growth across 8 critical categories, namely, disruptive technologies, innovative business models, transformative Megatrends, customer value chain compression, industry convergence, geopolitical chaos, competitive intensity, and internal challenges.
This analysis serves as a strategic guide for CEOs, growth teams, and industry leaders. It is designed to move organizations from a reactive posture to proactive leadership, providing the necessary pivots to survive the intelligence revolution and capture new market potential in an increasingly complex ecosystem.
