Description
The Indonesian endoscopy devices market is growing. It is driven by rising awareness, the growing demand for better healthcare, and the expanding aging population. Growth is also attributed to the increase in the number of patients and treatment procedures and the anticipated rise in the number of minimally invasive surgeries.
The introduction of BPJS in 2014, Indonesia’s national healthcare insurance, has increased the influx of patients to primary care clinics (PUSKESMAS) and low-tier hospitals, thereby boosting the number of hospitals and hospital beds. Indonesia's UHC covers the general population and creates opportunities for private healthcare through growth in private health insurance.
The number of hospital operating theaters is gradually rising, with private hospitals having more advanced surgical systems. Indonesia has a low average of 0.3 doctors per 1,000 people, when compared to the global average of 1.4; the number of nurses per 1,000 people is less than half of the 3.3 global ratio.
According to WHO, the mortality rate due to non-communicable diseases increased from 51% in 2004 to 71% in 2014. Cancer accounts for the 3rd-highest disease mortality rate in Indonesia and is growing at an annual rate of 12%. As surgery continues to remain the primary treatment for cancer, the market for minimally invasive devices is expected to expand over the next 3-5 years. Growth in cancer incidences drives the market while the high cost limits opportunities. Indonesia’s hospitals face limited budgets, a lack of technical expertise, and poor after-sales service of local distributors. The key criteria for success is to provide high-quality products, reliable after-sales service, and timely product maintenance at low costs. Sales processes can vary based on the specific solutions required, such as the size and the complexity of existing infrastructure. Less-invasive treatments will continue to grow in the midst of pharmacological treatment substitutes.
Laparoscopic surgeries account for most of the procedures performed, with limited budgets and resistance to new techniques restraining growth.
