Steel is one of the essential drivers of infrastructure development, urbanization, and industrialization of any country. It plays a key role in economic expansion, contributing significantly to a country's gross domestic product (GDP). As demand for steel rises globally, there is a critical need to modernize existing capacities and develop new facilities. However, a significant challenge in the iron and steel sector is reducing carbon dioxide emissions, as they contribute about 7% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally. Implementing competitive low-emission routes for the direct reduction of iron across existing steel production and new plants can significantly lower future emissions. The future of sustainable steelmaking lies in hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron, which integrates renewable energy and advances the hydrogen economy. This pathway provides a low-emission route to decarbonize steelmaking while ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness when supported by governments.

This study covers the following topics:

It assesses global CO? emissions in steel production and details the carbon footprint of steelmaking pathways and their influence on economic stability and industrial growth.
It investigates the role of hydrogen in reducing emissions from the iron and steelmaking industry.
It offers comparative insights into steel production pathways to analyze their dependency on the power grid, also focusing on renewable energy, environmental impact, and the levelized cost of steel.
It provides patent landscape mapping of the key stakeholders driving innovations.
It includes notable case studies and projects shaping the industry, discusses strategies for large-scale adoption, and examines strategic opportunities.
