Ion exchange resin is a cross linked and a porous polymer made out of polystyrene or polyacrylic compounds containing functional groups with mobile ions which can be exchanged with the ions of the same charge when dissolved in a liquid media. Anion exchange resins in particular have negatively charged mobile ions for such exchange processes.
The WBA resins are predominantly used in the tertiary amine form. Unlike strong basic anion (SBA) resins, which maintain the positive charge along a wide pH range, WBA resins are neutralized at higher pH levels as WBA resins undergo rapid deprotonation and thus the ion exchange capacity of the WBA resins increases with the decrease in pH of the solution. WBA resins are also known as acid absorbers as WBA resins can remove only the anions of strong mineral acids including sulfates, chlorides, and nitrates and thus can be extensively used for removing organic substances from water and wastewater. WBA resins are mostly manufactured in the gel and macroporous form, which is used in a wide range of applications.
