This study provides a comprehensive voice-of-customer (VOC) assessment of India’s CNG passenger car market, uncovering key insights into buyer behavior, decision triggers, and ecosystem challenges. Based on in-depth quantitative and qualitative research across Delhi NCR, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, the study evaluates perspectives from current CNG car owners, potential buyers, and non-interested consumers, alongside OEM and aftermarket dealers.

Findings indicate that low fuel cost, high mileage, and reduced maintenance continue to be the core drivers for CNG car adoption, especially among urban, high-mileage users and commercial drivers. However, major barriers persist, including poor infrastructure (limited CNG stations), safety concerns, limited boot space, and weak perceptions of engine performance. The study reveals a strong preference among potential users for retrofit kits due to cost flexibility, while OEM-fitted CNG vehicles are favored for warranty-backed reliability.

Dealers perceive a fragmented but opportunity-rich ecosystem, where value-based messaging, improved financing for retrofits, and safety assurances for OEM kits can boost uptake. Targeted campaigns, especially on digital platforms such as YouTube and Facebook, coupled with regional customization and influencer outreach, are recommended to build consumer confidence and demand.

This research equips automotive OEMs, aftermarket service providers, financial institutions, and policymakers with actionable strategies to mainstream CNG vehicles as a viable, eco-conscious urban mobility solution. As India transitions toward cleaner energy, CNG’s potential as a bridge fuel can be unlocked through ecosystem alignment, safety standardization, and consumer-centric innovation.
