For years, while cameras drew the attention and budget in meeting rooms, audio was often a second thought. That assumption has expired. Audio now sits at the center of meeting equity and collaboration effectiveness, because even the sharpest image is useless if people cannot be heard and understood accurately.
In AI-enabled rooms, microphones are becoming part of the key infrastructure for agents embedded in collaboration platforms, which need to understand who is speaking, where people are seated, whether coverage is adequate, when the camera should reframe, and whether the room is healthy. This is most obvious in the ceiling arrays market, where microphones are evolving from passive capture devices into room-intelligence platforms supporting participant mapping, camera framing, occupancy analytics, and adaptive audio.
The same logic is reshaping the standalone DSP. Processing is not disappearing, but the assumption that it must be bought as separate hardware is fading, as capability moves into microphones and chips that combine audio handling with inference.
At the same time, data sovereignty is moving from a compliance footnote to the procurement gate. Once a room can produce a searchable transcript of everything said inside it, buyers ask where inference runs, who owns the data, and whether the chain can be audited. Addressing these questions now requires vendors to form a practical trust framework.
The commercial result is a split rather than a race to the bottom. At the low and mid-tier, USB connectivity and competent capture become table stakes in devices. At the high end, price holds where devices can demonstrate certified integration, ease of deployment, robust security, management, and reliability.
Vendors are responding through bundling, either via acquisition or platform expansion, with the advantage shifting from hardware quality to ecosystem depth.
