Soil health has been a key determinant of food production since the invention of agriculture. However, the pressure to produce more food from that soil has intensified, as the global population has increased.
Advances in farming technology, especially fertilizers, have allowed food production to increase sufficiently to feed the growing global population. However, these highly intensive food production practices have been at the expense of the health of the soil itself.
This Frost & Sullivan analysis helps identify opportunities for companies to support the drive to improve soil health. The analysis is broken down into four sections, each tackling a key aspect of soil health:
1. Defining the problem: What is the world’s land used for, what is the current status of soil health, and what could be done to improve it? The state of soil health is discussed in this section by region, covering the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia (ME&SA), and Asia-Pacific (APAC).
2. Identifying what types of companies will pay for these improvements and who can play a role in driving improvements in soil health: The types of companies considered include retail food brand owners, financial institutions, and the major agricultural commodity traders (the so-called ABCD companies).
3. Profiling the potential solutions: What are the solutions available to enhance soil health, and which are likely to be most important? The solutions are broken down into five categories: Biological enhancement, organic (carbon) enhancement, enhancement using inorganic chemicals, enhancement by crop rotation, and enhancement by companion planting.
4. Identifying growth opportunities by suggesting ideas on how companies can get involved beyond the provision of the physical solutions profiled in other sections of the analysis: Six unique growth opportunities have been included in the report.
The base year for this report is 2025, with the forecast period being from 2026 to 2032.
