The Sri Lankan mobile market has experienced a strong growth over the last five years, and is primarily dominated by the two leading service providers. The country’s subscriber base grew at a CAGR of 7.4% from 2011 to 2016, and improved the country’s mobile penetration from 90.4% in 2011 to 123.9% in 2016. Amid the intense competition, mobile services business is expected to observe a net-addition of almost 4.7 million subscribers during the forecast period, and mobile penetration is expected to reach 139.7% by 2021.
          
The Sri Lankan mobile market is primarily a prepaid market, with almost 90% of the mobile subscribers on the prepaid plans, and these prepaid subscribers contribute to almost 70% of the total service revenue. In terms of services, voice services continue to be the dominant segment; however, mobile data services demonstrated robust revenue growth supported by fast adoption of smartphone and strong uptake of data based digital services.
