While the regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs) and the long distance carriers continue to face an increasing level of competition from alternative service providers and technologies, the rural incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs), continue to realize growth in subscribers and revenues. Whereas the RBOCs have shown a continued decline in local access lines due to competition from competitive providers such as AT&T and WorldCom (The Neighborhood service) as well as the growth in cable telephony, the rural ILECs on the other hand are expanding their reach by entering new markets. Over the next 24 months, the rural ILECs will continue to realize revenue growth through provision of new services to their customers.
